Hello everyone! it’s Allyah and welcomes back to the-book-escape!
In this post, I plan to tell you all that I plan to read for the month of June!
Before I get into my books for this month, I just wanted to say a few things. We all can see what is happening in the world right now, it’s is not right and we need justice for all of the black people that have been treated unfairly and have been murdered by the people whose jobs are to protect them. I am before anything else a black woman. I am hurting, I am grieving, but we will get through this. Black lives matter, they always have, and will always matter. I have taken some time off to deal with my emotions around this but I am back. I am black, black lives matter, we want and deserve justice. If you are wondering what you can do, hit up your old pal Google, there are so many resources for you to donate, sign petitions, and educate yourselves.
With that being said, let’s get into the books, shall we!
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer Stone by J.K. Rowling
I read this book over a decade ago and haven’t read it since and I’ve never completed the series. I remember trying to complete the 4th book like 5 times and gave up. That was when I was 12. I am now 23 LOL. So yeah. What sparked my interest is how many Harry Potter stans there are. So many people absolutely love this series and I want in. I want to understand their genuine passion for this series. I am giving it ago! Though I am excited to get into this. I do not support J.K Rowling LOL I know this is contradictory but she is trans-phobic.
These books are over 10 years old so no worries, I am not tossing her any coin.
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
This monster-sized book is 848 pages long and it is filled with fantasy goodness. It’s hard to summarize due to all the many character perspectives so I would look this one up if you are interested. This is actually my first introduction into adult high fantasy so I cannot wait to dive right into this. If you saw my May TBR post, yes. I did not get into it last month so this month I shall conquer it!
Thickerlla by Tanzania Glover
This novel is a retelling of the well known classic Cinderella and it . follows the main character Tiller who ended up growing up a bit too fast after the passing of the father, this caused her to let go of her desire for that fairytale romance. 10 years later she finds herself back in her home town and ends up meeting in her eyes the perfect prince charming in Cameron Logan. She now has to decide if she still actually longs for this fairytale romance, or will she decide the glass slipper life is not for her.
Soft Magic by Upile Chisala
I have been craving for some poetry and learned about this author in one of the many book reading groups I am in on Facebook. This is also really short read and I can’t wait to dive into this.
Boardroom to Bedroom by Jules Bennet
This is another one of those steaming employee boss (consensual!) relationships and this trope is so overdone but I want to add some spice to this TBR and I was actually able to get this book for free so like the rest of the books, I shall eat this up.
Books #6 & #7
Destroy Me & Unravel Me by Tarereh Mafi
The last two books are part of the same series.
So let me explain, there’s context to this. I am currently rereading the Shatter Me series (which is NO LONGER a trilogy but it’s fine) because I haven’t read the rest of the new books. This series has a special place in my heart and Mafi’s writing style and these books are what truly started my passion for reading and motivated me to follow my dreams to become a writer. I’ve read the trilogy 4 times and the novelas twice. Yes prior to this reread. This is a series I completely stan.
When I found out the series I loved the most was continuing? I was SO confused. I remember the first 3 times reading it I wanted more. But finally after the last reread I finally found contentment. I said it’s alright to end something beautiful so WHEN I SAW that a fourth book was being released titled Restore Me I felt like I was being punked.
I spent over an hour looking to make sure this book was real and when I found out I preordered that sucker and it arrived and I was quaking and I got like… halfway through and never touched it again. At the time I felt like I was reading a fanfic of a story I grew to love and cherish. So now. I am going in. I want to read this series completely and go into a deep dive into every book to see what my final thoughts are. Though my initial thoughts weren’t the best of these new additions. I am going in and deep-diving into the entire series (which there is a total of 10, which includes 6 books and 4 novellas) and I am going to be breaking down each book to see if I still love them as much as I remembered and how I feel about the new additions and for the first time do an in-depth book analysis. I’ll probably group them into 3. The first post will be regarding Shatter Me, Destroy Me and Unravel Me.
I cannot wait to open the conversation up with you after my analysis my favorite series of all time and hear your thoughts. I should hopefully have the first post up in July if not the end of this month!
Thus concludes my loaded June TBR. I have a lot of books I plan to read this month and I can’t wait to get into it! I’d love to know what you guys are planning on reading for the month of June!
Until next time,
